PY0714 "C566 - 1983"

Visited Yellowstone National Park for the first time. A bucket-list item for me. Spent a few hours in West Yellowstone visiting the museum and doing a few touristy things. Looked for a few benchmarks too.

Located in the Town of West Yellowstone, Gallatin County, Montana, this NGS mark was set vertically in the south-facing wall of the old railroad station, which is now used as a museum for the City of West Yellowstone, the National Park, and everything else Yellowstone (and Montana).  The NGS mark stamped "C566 - 1983" was found at 14:30, 23 July 2019 as described and in good condition. Go to description is adequate to find the mark. You don't have to go through the Museum, just walk around back.

Published NAD83 coordinates are located about 182 feet southeasterly of the found WGS84 coordinates. WGS84 coordinates for the mark found by 3 minute occupation with 6 strong satellites and 1 WAAS satellite. It should be stated that the roof made satellite acquisition difficult.

Control Text
  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
