PY0160 "Y8 - 1923"

Visited Yellowstone National Park for the first time. A bucket-list item for me. Spent a few hours in Fort Yellowstone and the Mammoth Hot Springs visiting the museum, taking lots of pictures, and doing a few touristy things. Looked for a few benchmarks too.

Located at Fort Yellowstone near the very scenic Mammoth Hot Springs in Park County, Wyoming, this USC&GS mark lies adjacent to the walkway to the front steps of the Horace M. Albright Visitor Center.  The USC&GS mark stamped "Y8 - 1923" was found at 08:55, 24 July 2019 as described and in generally good condition. This is a high pedestrian traffic area and this mark gets regular visitors and viewings. Being right in front of one of the most prominent buildings in the vicinity, I'm sure it is well protected by the Fort & Park staff. Go to description is adequate to find the mark.

Published NAD83 coordinates are located about 109 feet westerly of the found WGS84 coordinates. WGS84 coordinates for the mark found by 3 minute occupation with 8 strong satellites and 1 WAAS satellite.

Control Text
  • The horizontal coordinates were scaled from a topographic map and have an estimated accuracy of +/- 6 seconds.
  • The orthometric height was determined by differential leveling and adjusted by the National Geodetic Survey in June 1991.
  • The geoid height was determined by GEOID99.
  • The dynamic height is computed by dividing the NAVD 88 geopotential number by the normal gravity value computed on the Geodetic Reference System of 1980 (GRS 80) ellipsoid at 45 degrees latitude (g = 980.6199 gals.).
  • The modeled gravity was interpolated from observed gravity values.
